Riverport Market - a Must See

I've decided it's fate, on my drive in this morning I was thinking that I should blog about one of my new favorite stores, Riverport Market - A Taste of Missouri, in Glasgow, Mo. Wouldn't you know it, I checked my Google alert and there was an article about them in the Columbia Tribune yesterday. Seeing that, I knew I must share both the story and my experience.

Restored Pressed Tin Ceiling

As I said the Riverport Market has made my list of new favorite stores. The first weekend in September Danene (Mo Wine Girl) and I were hosting travel journalists at several Missouri wineries and agritourism destinations. The Riverport Market hosted our group for dessert that Saturday evening. I loved everything about the store! From the welcoming owner, Greg Speiser, and manager, Terri Crawford-Goss, to the restored historical building with the pressed tin ceiling, to the tasty and unique Missouri products.

In addition to selling almost entirely AgriMissouri foods and wines, the Riverport Market also offers beautiful hand-crafted pottery that is usable! You don't just look at it!

I only got a brief taste of Glasgow that evening but the town seems very friendly and welcoming. I am definitely going back to visit Terri & Greg, shop for Christmas gifts, discover the town and the bakery next door to the Riverport Market.

They've got a couple events coming up that you might keep in mind. This Saturday, October 18 at 3:00 p.m. is the Beer Festival, featuring O'Fallon Brewery and their seasonal 'Pumpkin Beer" and on Saturday, November 8 at 2:00 p.m. the Riverport Market will kick off the Christmas season with specials and a wine tasting featuring Indian Creek Winery's wines and wine jellies.

Les Bourgeois Winery Upcoming Events

Winestrollpostersm Join Les Bourgeois Winery on September 20 for the annual Crush Festival and Rocheport Wine Stroll. It's two events in one day so you can come for the day.

The Crush Festival features live music, meet the winemakers, a homemade wine competition and lots more.

Later in the evening, stroll through scenic Rocheport, Missouri while sipping a variety of Missouri wines. I've been told 15 Missouri wineries will be sampling wines in different locations throughout Rocheport. You can stroll from place to place and find your favorite. I would suggest purchasing your tickets in advance so you don't miss out.

"Mount Pleasant Winery Bottles it up in Branson"

I don't know how many of you read the magazine Inside Columbia, but I really enjoy checking out the glossy photos and reading the articles.  In the June 2008 magazine there was a travel column called "Big Trip, Little Trip" that featured Anaheim, California (Big Trip) and Branson, Missouri (Little Trip).

It was a small article on the different things to do in Branson, but I was surprised to find that the article was void of any agritourism references.  If you'll remember back to my blog in June about all of the fun things to see on your way down to Branson, it seems like they forgot a big chunk of fun things to do.

One of the great sites to visit is Mount Pleasant Winery.  This is a new location for Mount Pleasant Winery just opened in April, but I wanted to make sure that if you travel down to Branson that you don't miss this!  Here's a blurb from the website about Mount Pleasant Winery.

Spinning Wool to Yarn

Mount Pleasant Winery’s 9,200 square-foot tasting and bottling experience in Branson is nestled on two acres on Green Mountain Drive. The beautiful ledgestone building offers patrons the chance to shop, sample Mount Pleasant’s numerous award-winning wines and even bottle their own wine from a specially designed 600-gallon French oak barrel. Perfect for small groups and bus tours, Mount Pleasant’s Branson facility is open Monday through Saturday 8:30 a.m. to dusk and Sundays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Founded in 1859, the winery in Augusta, Missouri, the first government-appointed wine-growing district in the United States, grows 12 grape varieties on 85 acres and its original limestone cellars are still used to age its estate-bottled wines and international award-winning Ports.

Spinning Wool to Yarn

Mount Pleasant's new Branson location is more than just a fabulous place to sample great wines!  They have so much more!  They have a wine shop, an art gallery, and (this is my favorite!) a hands-on bottling experience.  You can tour the facility and taste the wines, but "visitors to the Branson location have the unique opportunity to bottle their own dessert wine from a specially designed 600-gallon French oak barrel.  The 12-ounce bottles of wine make a great souvenir or gift with a personal touch, and at only $9.99 an inexpensive one too."

Spinning Wool to Yarn

This is definitely a stop that I'm planning on making the next time I'm down that way!  I love tasting wine anyway, but to get to be part of the winemaking process makes it more than a visit, it makes it an experience!  Be sure to check it out the next time your down in Branson, or visit the original Mount Pleasant Winery in Augusta, MO.  Just remember you won't get to bottle your own in Augusta, that's a specialty of the Branson winery!

Bristle Ridge Winery!

I visited with Sarah from Bristle Ridge Winery the other day and I fell in love with the little winery in Monserratt!  They have a really beautiful set-up and with a large deck and several different places to sit and enjoy the outdoors!  Here are a few pictures from my visit to Bristle Ridge Winery!

Winery

They have all types of wine from a Diamond (american hybrid grape with a very sweet taste), Seyvel Blanc (a crisp, clean, light golden wine that goes will with seafood), a dry red Burgandy, and even a Hard Apple Cider!.  Feel free to bring a picnic and enjoy the great wines that this vineyard has to offer!

The beautiful setting out at Bristle Ridge Winery is perfect for a birthday, anniversary or work party.  It is also perfect for a small, intimate outdoor wedding.  With a vineyard for a background, what more could a bride ask for?!  I really enjoyed this winery and I hope that you'll take the time to head up there and check it out.  It is a short drive WEST from Sedalia and EAST from Warrensburg.  It's worth the time and I guarntee that you will go back!

-Katie

*Correction 7/25/08* Bristle Ridge is EAST of Warrensburg and WEST of Sedalia!  Thanks to Suzy Latare who reminded me that Highway 50 does not run North/South!  SORRY EVERYONE!  And thanks again Suzy!!

A Waverly Welcome!

I'm traveling again this week (surprise, surprise!) and today I headed up to Waverly, MO.  I visited with Paul from Peters Market and Peters Orchard.  I want to start off by saying CONGRATULATIONS to Peters Market and Peter's Orchard for 100 years in business!!  From 1908 to 2008 Peter's has been going strong.

There is plenty of produce to choose from in the market.  There are potatoes, green beans, onions, zucchini, and more.  There are also peaches, honey, and plenty of Missouri products including Wilby's Firehouse Mustard.

Peter's Orchard

A unique item that they have is "Oh So Good" jelly and jam.  This product was a project for an FFA student in the Waverly area.  I thought it was really great to see them supporting an FFA student's project!  (this wasn't the only place I saw this product either!  Kudos to Kate, the FFA student who created this!!)

Peter's Orchard

Apples are the main fruit produced at Peters.  There are over 13 types of apples grown at Peters Orchard and sold at Peters Market. Check out their website for the expected apple ripening schedule for the fall, www.petersorchards.com.

After I visited Peters Market I drove a few minutes up to Baltimore Bend WineryBaltimore Bend is a beautiful winery a couple miles north of Waverly. They have 13 different types of wine, including a peach wine and an apple wine.  Several of their wines have won awards and their Arrowhead Red is their biggest seller!

If you're looking for a unique and fun gift for any occasion be sure to check out their gift shop.  It is filled with some great Missouri products as well as fun wine racks, wine mixes, dip mixes and plenty other gift ideas!

Baltimore Bend Winery has quite an entertainment schedule as well.  Click here for the entertainment schedule!!  They have a great outdoor area and a deck to enjoy the evening concerts.  The bands play on the back of a hay wagon, giving the concert a great country feel!  There are all types of bands that will be playing there... be sure to check it out!!!

Escape the Ordinary... Visit Crown Country!

When I made my appointment to visit Crown Valley Winery in Ste. Genevieve, I was expecting that I would see the winery and go home...you can't imagine how wrong I was.  Not only was this one of the most creatively planned out wineries that I've ever been through, all of the other places that Crown Country has to offer have taken this from winery trip to vacation destination!

You're sure to find beauty in the rolling hills and lush green countryside of Crown Country, located in Missouri's historic Ste. Genevieve County. And from a tasting at Crown Valley Winery to a V.I.P. tour of Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary, Crown Country truly has something for everyone. Meet our winemaker, relax at one of our lavish rooms, enjoy a round of golf at our 4 star course, or stop by luxurious Tiger Ridge Restaurant for a meal made with Crown Farms' homegrown ingredients. With many easy options you can make it a weekend trip or an all-inclusive package. Escape the ordinary and visit Crown Country - www.crowncountry.com

I thought one of the most outstanding things about the whole trip was that much of the material and craftsmanship on all of the different destinations in Crown Country is MISSOURI-MADE.  Crown Country is very dedicated to utilizing what Missouri has to offer whenever possible.  From the wood detail in the winery to the iron-work above the tasting bar, Crown Country showcases the talent that can be found in Missouri!

Spinning Wool to Yarn

There was so much to see and so many things to do in Crown Country.  I really hope that I can remember everything!  The most amazing thing about much of Crown Country is that 5 years ago, not much of it was there.  In addition to growing at an increasingly, rapid pace, Crown Country is almost completely a self-sustaining company.  Meaning that they landscape with flowers that they grow in their greenhouses, cook with the vegetables that they produce, prepare the beef that they raise, and so much more!

I met Bryan Siddle, the go-to guy for Crown Country, at the Champagne House right off of Highway 67 in Farmington.  I was immediatley impressed with how nicely landscaped that front of the Champagne House was.  Inside the Champagne House I toured their state-of-the-art facility; a real treat considering that this is the only Champagne House in the Midwest.  This is where all of the sparkling wines are produced.  When you visit, don't leave out taking the tour.  You won't see this equipment anywhere else in the Midwest!  Don't forget to visit the tasting room after you take the tour.  In the tasting room you can sample sparkling wines, champagnes, and limited-edition wines.  Take advantage of tasting the limited-edition wines here because the Champagne House is the only place where you can taste them.  You can purchase them at Crown Valley Winery, but you can't taste them there!

Spinning Wool to Yarn

From the Champagne House, we went to Crown Ridge to check out the Tiger Ridge Restaurant, three bed and breakfast facilities and the TIGERS!  The restaurant was absolutely beautiful and I'm told that it has great food!  I'll check that out next time I'm down there (which will be VERY soon!).  The three different bed and breakfast facilities are Tiger Pointe, Tiger View Lodge and Tiger Den.  Surrounding these three facilities is a swimming pool, tennis courts, a nature trail, and a breath-taking view over miles of land.  Oh, and they are just a few feet away from the tiger sanctuary!

[Crown Ridge] has been designed to surpass the most stringent standards for health and well-being of our big cats... Our female tigers Tor and Gracie, their parents Mohan and Raja, the African lioness Alexis and Izzy, the newest tiger, live in an environment custom-designed to fit their needs.

Spinning Wool to Yarn

[Crown Ridge] has established this as a permanent home for these exotic cats as part of our commitment to conservation and wildlife preservation.  Through presentations, tours, youth programs and our website, www.crown-ridge.com, we seek to educate people on the dangers these cats face in the wild as well as in captivity. - Crown Ridge Brochure

Needless to say this is one part of the destination that you don't want to miss!  The tigers were beautiful and the rooms at the bed and breakfast facilities blew me away!  Bryan's attention to detail and dedication to perfection shine through in these flawless rooms!  The three bed and breakfast facilities on Crown Ridge aren't the only one's in Crown Country.  There are also the Coffman house, Miss L's House, and the Vineyard House.  One of my favorite amenities that is included in your stay at one of these bed and breakfast facilities is the shuttle provided to take you to any of the Crown Country destinations.

Spinning Wool to Yarn

We stopped at the brewery to check out the progress that Bryan and his team are making.  Even without all of the finishing touches, it was immaculate!  It is very apparent in all of the different sites of Crown Country, that Bryan thinks every floor tile, ceiling tile and minute detail through before executing the plan.  Thus creating ambience, comfort and appeal to all who visit!

There is also many antique malls and a 4 1/2 star golf course in Crown Country.  There is enough to see here that will make everyone happy and keep them entertained!

Our final stop was the Crown Valley Winery

Located in scenic and historic Ste. Genevieve County, Crown Valley Winery is an architectural masterpiece, overlooking lush vineyards and panoramic views of the countryside.  Our impressive array of fine, hand-crafted wines will be sure to enchant your palate. While sipping on your favorite Crown Valley wine, enjoy your choice of indoor or outdoor seating.  For chilly harvest evenings, warm up by our stone fire pit.  The bistro offers boxed lunches, sausages, cheese and an assortment of gourmet snacks and premium cigars. - Crown Valley Winery Brochure

I got to ride through their vineyards featuring 13 different types of grapes.  I saw the farmers' market that they have on-site, raspberries, blackberries, greenhouses, vegetable gardens and so much more.  I also saw the covered wagon that offers 30 minute tours of the vineyards (weekends only, call to schedule in advance).  The covered wagon tour also includes a glass of your favorite wine to sip as you enjoy your tour.  And this was all before I even stepped foot inside of the winery.

Spinning Wool to Yarn

When you enter Crown Valley Winery you walk through the retail store and into the coolest winery setup that I have ever seen.  Joe H. Scott Sr. designed the winery so that the walkway was above where the wine was made, enabling whomever crosses the footbridge to be able to look down and get a birds-eye-view of the wine making.  It is really a unique experience!

With over 50 wines in their selection, Crown Valley Winery offers many options for tasting.  The $5 Crown Valley Wine Tasting Sampler includes a complimentary glass, and seven wine samples of your choice.  The $8 Winery Tour and Wine Tasting Sampler includes a 30 minute tour of the Crown Valley Winery winemaking process and also includes the Crown Valley Wine Tasting Sampler.

Spinning Wool to Yarn

Don't stop after the tasting!  You have to go outside on the HUGE deck and check out the view of the vineyards.  You can either sit outside and sip your favorite wine, (if it gets chilly just move next to the fire pit!) or you can go under the pavilion and enjoy the live entertainment that they provide every weekend!  Click here for the calendar of events planned!

And don't forget... if you have a meeting, wedding or event dinner coming up, Crown Valley Winery has several great places to host your next get-together!  They even have a banquet room that makes you feel like you're down in the cellar with all of the barrels!  It would be a very impressive place to host a meeting!

Spinning Wool to Yarn

Whew!  I don't feel like I've even given you a glimpse of what Crown Country is like.  I strongly encourage everyone to go down and check out this vacation destination.  There is so much to see and so much to experience that it may take several trips to take it all in!  I hope everyone takes a weekend to check this place out.  I know I've already got a girls weekend planned for this fall that will be down at Crown Country!!

Look out for Vinograd in 2009!!

I was finalizing my plans for my Kansas City trip this week and contacted Paul of Vinograd Winery.  I wanted to drop by and check out their place!

As it turns out... they are in a major transition phase right now.  They are currently building a shopping center with 12,000 square feet of fun!  Paul said that the center will have a winery, grocery store, and restaurant and should be completed in a year.  Unfortunatly for me, I don't get to go visit Vinograd Winery right now, but luckily for everyone else, you can still purchase their wine and barbeque sauce online a www.vinogradwinery.com.

Here's a photo of the Vinograd Winery with downtown Kansas City in the background from their website.

Spinning Wool to Yarn

For those of you who are not familiar with Vinograd Winery, Paul sent me a description to help familarize everyone!

Vinograd Winery - Turning a Family Tradition into a Business

"They came from Croatia and Slovakia in 1907 with the clothes on their back, very little money in their pockets, a hard work ethic and their knowledge of how to make wine."  The wine making tradition has been handed down many generations in the Wrabec family and now Paul Wrabec is planting as much as possible of his 31 acres in Sugar Creek, Missouri.  Due to popular demand for the family wine Paul is making his vintages available to the public.

The Wrabec family makes 4 types of wine as well as BBQ sauce from their grapes.  The VinoQue Sauce is one of the only BBQ sauces made from wine in the country.  These products are available by contacting vinogradwinery.com or by calling 816-836-5903.

The VinoQue Sauce is described as having a sweet & tangy flavor with a subtle smoky finish.  The St. Cyril's Concord wine is a traditional sweet and fruity table wine.

Make sure you check out Vinograd Winery's website and try their original VinoQue Sauce!  Look for more information about Vinograd Winery's building progress later on this year!
